These are images that are still covered under copyright, but are used for the purposes of illustration because no free alternative exists.  This does not mean that you can simply upload any image you want.  For an image to be considered fair use here, it must be used for legitimate commentary, it must not be used commercially, it must not affect the saleability of its source, and must not negate the work's primary purpose so as to render it redundant.  An image that is being used under the constraints of "fair use" here is ''still covered by copyright'' in most countries, and ''cannot be used elsewhere'' unless the same conditions of fair use are met.
