Centre-left coalition
In Talossan politics, the centre-left coalition was a group of parties that held power in 2014 and 2015, generally belonging to the centre-left part of the Talossan political spectrum. It was informally known as the Rainbow Coalition, or later as the Time's Up Coalition in the run-up to the 46th Cosa.
Formed in opposition to the RUMP's longstanding majority rule of Talossa, the coalition comprised different parties, as time passed:
- It was initially created in the rundown to the 44th Cosa, dubbed as the "Joint Programme of the Four Parties" between ZRT, MRPT, CSPP and APT, the latter of which didn't ultimately contest the elections - the programme comprised estabilishing an unified legal code, mandating candidate lists for elections to the Cosa, shifting control and manner of Senate elections to the provinces, and ending the ban on participation in micronations;
- During the 45th Cosa, it informally comprised the ZRT, MRPT, CSPP, NPW and LPR, hence the moniker "rainbow coalition", but it never officially acted as an opposition coalition;
- It gained power in the 46th Cosa, the cabinet being formed by MRPT, ZRT and LPR, Glüc da Dhi serving as Seneschal;
- It retained power in the 47th Cosa, with the addition of the Liberal Congress and the Progressive Party, without the Republicans (merged back into the ZRT) and with Lüc da Schir as Prime Minister;
- It was again returned to power in the 48th Cosa, as ZRT and Liberals merged into the Free Democratic Alliance, with Carlüs Xheraltescu subbing in as Seneschal.
The existence of the coalition, even though at times ephemeral and at other times more solid, effectively locked the RUMP out of power unless it managed to win an overall majority, and meant that whichever party got the most votes among the coalition, rather than overall, would lead the next government. This was thwarted in the 45th Cosa, with the nonpartisan Independent Party choosing to prop up a renewed RUMP government, but happened in the three terms thereafter, forcing the RUMP to rely on its control of half of the Senate to hinder unwanted legislation during the 46th Cosa - a tactic dubbed the "Fortress Senats" by then-Mençei Mick Preston.
The coalition effectively folded in the waning days of the 48th Cosa, when the Moderate Radicals abandoned Xheráltescu's cabinet and went on to form a coalition with the RUMP in the next term - ending the four years of polarisation between the RUMP and the other political forces that ensued after Reunision and ushering in the era known as tripolarism.
Parties that formed the centre-left coalition
- The Moderate Radical Party of Talossa
- The Zefençadéirs del Repúblicanismeu Talossán, their offspring Liberal Congress and the two parties's merger Free Democratic Alliance
- The Progressive Party, in its various iterations (excluding the 46th Cosa)
- The Republican Party of Talossa (45th and 46th Cosa)
Other parties that were unofficially in the coalition include:
- The Peculiarist Alliance of Talossa, which co-signed the "Joint Programme of the Four Parties" but didn't hold seats in the 44th Cosa;
- The New Peculiar Way, which was a part of the opposition to the RUMP-IND government of the 45th Cosa;
- The Talossan Workers Party, which in the 47th Cosa merged its seats with the ZRT, and had its leader serve in Glüc da Dhi's Cabinet as an independent;
- The Talossan National Congress, whose leader Breneir Itravilatx entered Cabinet in the 48th Cosa as part of the MRPT delegation, but formed his own party later in the term and, accordingly, did not resign along with the other Moderate Radical ministers
Other centrist or leftist parties that coexisted during the same timespan, but didn't join any iteration of the coalition, included the Talossan Socialist Party, which acted as a crossbench party in the 48th Cosa but mostly supported the coalition, and the Independent Party, which though nonpartisan chose to join the RUMP into coalition during the 45th Cosa.
