A matronymic, sometimes also called a metronymic, a matronym, or a metronym, is a name derived from and based on the given name of a female ancestor, most commonly of the mother of the name's bearer. Such a name serves to identify the bearer with that person; it may also serve as an hommage to that person. The male counterpart to a matronymic is a patronymic.

Talossan matronymics

In Talossa, matronymics are quite rare. So rare, in fact, that currently only one citizen, the “inventor” of the Talossan matronymic, Magniloqueu Épiqeu da Lhiun, bears such a name. Da Lhiun has adapted the Romanian tradition of forming a matronymic, and applied it to the Talossan language as follows:

  • The name of the mother, if it derives from an Old Talossan word, is put into the according Old Talossan genitive form;
  • An a- is then prefixed to the name of the mother, which causes the lenition of the first letter, if possible.

In Da Lhiun's case, the name Clerglünă was matronymicised as follows:
“Clerglünă” is a compound word containing Old Talossan luna. Its genitive form is lunae, which becomes lünä in Modern Talossan. Then, the “A-” was added to the name Clerglünä, which results in Ac'hlerglünä.
